A Beautiful Autumn Day on the Water

It really was, by all accounts, a beautiful autumn day today.

We took the boat out.

The wind was a tad strong, so we had big waves, but it was quite nice for short trip on an autumn day.

No, this isn't one of my posts that I didn't get around to until months later.

We did have a lovely autumn day today, only today is July 14th.

Give me my summer back, Yellowknife!

NOW!  I've earned beach weather, damn it!

Have I Mentioned that Eli Loves his Boat?

It's true.

Eli loves his boat.

A few weekends ago , Eli finally took off for an expedition fishing and camping and boating trip to the East Arm of Great Slave Lake.

It's where the REALLY big fish hang out, and they think they are oh-so-cool because they live in the 'burbs.  Know what I'm saying?
Eli and a coworker buddy of his took off Friday, July 20th, from work, and left at about 2 am in the morning to take advantage of the calm winds.
2 am in July in Yellowknife means sunrise, y'all.

That's the Midnight Sun, right there.

And, Eli's boat.
The darkness of the looong winter exhasts me, and I must say that I was surprised to discover that the light of the looong summer days exhausts me, too.

Yellowknife is home of the extremes... extreme beauty and extreme exhaustion, I guess.

But the beauty is amazing, isn't it?
Isn't Eli well-trained?

He's been working on making that horizon straight when he snaps a picture to make his photographer hobbyist wife happy, and the pictures from this trip are outstanding!
Eli says this was totally worth waking up at 2 am.
About 2 hours later, the boys arrived in the East Arm, and headed to a secluded island protected island (yes, that's not a typo...) that Eli had picked out long before with his charts and maps.

He's an obsessive planner, and it pays off on these elaborate trips.

Oh, and Eli loves his boat.  Did you know that?  He loves those motors.
Eli said the weather was perfect and the fishing was amazing.  He said that at one point they were getting a big fish every 10 minutes!!
They saw two moose on the trip, too.

This one was swimming close to the boat.

I'm assuming that Eli zoomed in a bit here, but even still, that's a close moose encounter!

The other one was on an island facing the campsite, but Eli said that he didn't get to the camera in time.
They boys ate well, a la Chef Eli.
This is their camp set up.
Eli snapped this one as his buddy reeled in a large lake trout.

His pal brought along his dog for company and protection, and Eli said that it was pretty cool to have a dog in the boat.
De nuh, de nuh, denuh-denuh-denuh...
Eli was so impressed with the trout.  Even without a trophy trout, they were still among the biggest fish he's ever caught.
I like this one.  The dog is staring at his master... "Uh, Eli?  Are you sure master should be steering the fish catching aparatus??"

Eli like this one because you can see the two down riggers and rods.

Eli loves his boat.  He calls it a fish catching machine.  I know it's really his mistress.
Happy Eli.
Bird covered island.  Look at them all!
This was the big one from the fishing weekend.  16.22 lbs.  That's 7.36 kg.

That's waaay bigger than Twofour.
Eli and the Big Guy.
Yeah, that breath cannot be good!  Man, Eli must be hard up on these trips.

At least he always has his mistress.  The Boat.
Saturday night, Eli said that a thunder and lightning storm lit up the sky.

He snapped this from the boat as the storm approached, and as he headed back to camp.
Eli got back late on Sunday.

There are no pictures of his return trip because it was a lot windier, and he had to add an hour on to the travel time to safely manage the waves.

On Monday, however, he sorted out the filleted fish, and I found this in the kitchen when I went to check on him.

WHY would you need scissors and masking tape to fillet fish?
Well. Miss G really wanted to help, but the smell was driving her bonkers, so she improvised an ingenious stink-blocker all on her own!
She was so proud to be able to help Eli with the fish!
Smart Little G.

She loves Daddy.  She loves fish.  She does not love the smell.  She loves tape, though!

And, Daddy.  Well, Daddy loves his girls.  And, he loves his boat.

Summer Boating in the Heat of the Day

I know I haven't posted pictures in a little while.

Nanny called to register a request for more pictures.

I am on vacation, and somehow turning on the computer seemed like a lot of work...

But, I'm back.

I have been busy figuring out ways to turn my blog into a keepsake book for the family (more on that when they arrive), archiving the girls' Preschool and Kindergarten years (which I will post about), and I went into my classroom yesterday to set it up with a super-helpful friend (pictures of the room to follow once it is fully set up).

So, you see, I haven't been lazy, but just planning future blog posts!
Last weekend, we went out for a boat ride and to fish with the girls and Papa.

The water was as smooth as glass.  In short, a perfect day to be on the boat.
We absolutely HAD to go on the boat last weekend, because Miss G was adamant that we would.  Daddy has a perfectly enthusiastic little skipper.
Miss A was pretty excited to go fishing, too.  It is breezy when we are buzzing up the lake, hence Daddy's sweater as a blanket, but aside from that it was a HOT day.
Daddy loves his boat.  We all know that.

Papa loves it, too!  Yee haw!!
And, I am very useful for packing lunches and making sure all the right stuffies and books come along to keep the girls entertained when the fishing turns into waiting.
Nice 'do, Captain.

A wee bit windswept, are we?
The girls like to watch as Daddy's down rigger lowers deep into the water to catch fish.
And the stuffies are always on standby to ooh and aah when the fish are caught.
While Daddy fished, Miss A and I helped to steer the boat to where the fish were swimming below.
Papa supervised, and gave a heart-wrenching rendition of the Titanic scene, "I'm the king of the world!"

Miss G then told Papa that he must be mistaken because the Titanic is sunk in the ocean, so he can't be on the Titanic.  He is on Daddy's boat.  Duh!
We snacked and waited for fish.
Having Papa on board for some extra snuggles was really nice.
After a few bites, and one smallish trout (which is big by most standards, but small in the North-- we put him back), Daddy began to pack up, and THAT is when a big ol' trout was caught for supper.
In the meantime, Miss A and Papa were having a jumpin' good time in the bow of the boat.
"Higher, Papa!  Higher!"
We toured around the Lake to check out the beautiful rocky landscape.  The lakes here are unbelievable.  These rocky islands are deep (and I mean DEEP) right up to the edge.  Likewise, there are towers of rocks to be careful of in the lake.
With all of the fishing gear stored away, we promised the girls a visit to an island.
We motored right along, until Eli found a great island for a stop.
The island choice was an instant hit for the girls because they found this water snail on a rock, under the water, right on the shore of the island.

They named him Snail White.

Miss G commented, "I never saw a snail before, but I know that was a snail, and now I have seen a water snail!"
The girls peeled off the layers to go for a swim to cool off in the water.
Their toes are so cute.
We were lucky that this island had a nice shelf all around it, so the girls could wade out a bit, and Daddy could splash them.
Miss A took time to wave at any boats that went by.
Miss G did make it in the water, and promptly screamed, "Put me back!!!"

It will take a bit more practice to trust the lake as opposed to the pool.  And, according to Daddy, it was colder than expected.
Miss A helped Miss G get her footing on the rock when she got out.
Dried off and dressed, Miss A played with her shadow.
Miss G joined Daddy as he filleted the trout for supper.  She is so into everything to do with fishing except eating the fish.
Papa and Miss A threw rock after rock into the lake, and Miss A squealed with delight when ever Papa made a big splash.
I took pictures.  I'm such a helpful fisher.
